Stylesheets

“The source for documentation.”

There are several commonly available sets of stylesheets for DocBook. There are also publishing and formatting tools built into some commercial products.

The xslTNG Stylesheets

The DocBook xslTNG Stylesheets are modern, XSLT 3.0 stylesheets for publishing DocBook documents on the web or in print. The current print workflow uses CSS print stylesheets.

The DocBook XSLT 2.0 Stylesheets

The DocBook XSLT 2.0 Stylesheets were a first attempt to move DocBook XSLT support forward, beyond XSLT 1.0. They’re now largely defunct, replaced by the DocBook xslTNG Stylesheets. The print workflow uses XSL FO.

The DocBook XSLT 1.0 Stylesheets

The DocBook XSLT 1.0 Stylesheets have a long history. They date back to the early 2000’s and were then the replacement for DSSSL stylesheets that dated back to the 1990’s. These are still widely deployed, but not much development has happened recently. The print workflow uses XSL FO.
